Check the mpg statistics carefully and factor in the cost of ownership, that way you can work out which SUV is the cheapest to run.

Which of these is the right SUV for you and your family?

Fancy owning the best gas mileage SUV on the market? Then feast your eyes on this table of the top 10 highest-mpg contenders for the US car market, and take your pick.

The Ford Escape Hybrid is available in two models, a a front wheel drive or a 4WD vehicle. The hybrid 2-wheel-drive Ford Escape gives you around 31 to 34 mileage in city traffic, and close to 29 or 30 mpg on the freeway. While the 4-wheel-drive hybrid SUV pumps out a very nice 28 mpg in city traffic or on the freeway. Ford says its hybrid SUVs use electric motors while stopped or running at low speeds, and they use absolutely no fuel at those times. Kinetic energy in the vehicles brakes charges up the SUVs battery packs, which power the SUVs electric motors when the cars are going slowly.

The Mercury Mariner Hybrid also comes in two versions. a front wheel drive and a 4 wheel drive, similar to the hybrid Ford Escape. Both of the Mercury 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive hybrid Mercury Mariners have a 2.3L 133HP engine which has 30 or 34 miles per gallon and 27 or 29 miles per gallon respectively. Both SUV Mariners have electric motors which operate at speeds of up to 30 mph thus saving fuel when city driving. They can both run on full fuel, full battery power, or a combination of both. Everything depends on traffic conditions at the moment.

Mazda's hybrid Tribute SUV manages 29-34 miles per gallon in city traffic and 27-30 miles per gallon on the freeways, by EPA results. This is Mazda's first ever attempt at a hybrid car, and it is a commendable effort. The Mazda Tribute has better mileage and a spacious compartment in the rear. It has well-engineered low exhaust emmisions and it offers very good passenger safety from its side-curtain airbags.

The Saturn Vue Green Line is one of the best higher mpg SUVs right now, managing to do 25 mpg in the city and 32 miles per gallon on the freeway. The Saturn Vue Green Line has a 4 cylinder, 172 horsepower 2.4 liter engine and automatic transmission. It has a really strong body design and a multiple air bag passenger safety system which boosts the vehicle's safety features.

BMW's X6 xDrive35i SUV consumes around 25.9 miles per gallon and is fitted with a 24-valve DOHC, 6 cylinder, 3 liter turbo-charged 300 HP engine driving a 6-speed Sport Automatic Transmission and has BMW Adaptive Transmission Control. The BMW X6 xDrive35i amazed us by zooming from 0 to 60 mph in only 6.5 seconds. Formidable.

The Nissan Rouge SL gives you 22/27 mpg and is a tighter version of the old Nissan Murano. The Rouge SL uses a 4-cylinder, 2.5 liter, 167 horsepower engine with an Xtronic CVT (continuously-variable transmission). The Nissan Rouge SL can be ordered with the following optional extras: electric power steering (EPS) and advanced airbag systems.

The Toyota Hilander SUV does 20 miles per gallon by EPA figures, which makes it one of the more fuel-efficient SUVs available this year. The fuel saving figure is better than the earlier V-6 Hilander with its an average 19 miles per gallon. The newer Hilander has the same V6, 27 HP engine as does the Toyota Camry and it is surprisingly silent, particularly at highway speeds.

The Hyundai Veracruz Limited AWD is a grunty SUV challenger with its strong 260 horsepower, 3.8 liter, 24 valve V6 engine. Most standard SUVs have merely a 3.6 liter engine. The Veracruz Limited AWD's engine powers up the hills with its 257 lb-ft torque, a better result than Hyundai's earlier model.s It gets you 15 mpg in city traffic, acording to EPA figures, and 22 mpg out on the freeway. This makes it one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the US market.

Kia's Sorento 4WD is driven by a 242 horsepower, 3.3 liter V6 engine which produces one of the best mpg ratings among today's SUVs. Kia's Sorento SUV manages 15 to 16 miles per gallon in the city and 20 - 22 mpg on the freeways. It has a 5-speed auto transmission, has knee and side-curtain airbags plus a computerized stabilization system.

The LX570 SUV from Lexus gives you 12 - 15 mpg which is nothing really remarkable these days. It has a 5.7 liter, 381 horsepower V8 engine which does greater power than the previous versions of this car. The Lexus LX570 can be optionally equipped a multi-terrain ABS brake system for icy roads and a crawl control for steep and tricky descents.

Whichever of these great gas mileage vehicles you choose is up to you, but one thing is for sure... You're going to save gas with one of these neat machines.

I think the Ford Escape Hybrid is still the best SUV with best gas mileage today. In addition that, the SUV has comfortable ride and stylish interior.

It is so hard trying to find the balance between performance and power, especially with today's high gas prices.
